Painting ceilings
and walls.
Prepare
the surface for painting
-
Make sure
any imperfections in the walls or ceiling have been filled and rubbed down smooth. Any cracks in the ceiling line (where the
top of the wall meets the ceiling) can be filled with decorators caulk using a caulking gun. Once you have gone over the cracks
with a caulking gun, wipe along the ceiling line with a damp cloth. this is to make sure you smooth the caulk out. You can
also caulk around window frames and window boards andany internal corners using the same method. Caulk can
be easily painted over.
Painting
-
Once all
imperfections and cracks have been filled and rubbed down start painting the ceiling first. Start by "cutting in" round
the edge of the ceiling, cutting in means painting areas the roller can’t reach. By painting the ceiling first it doesn’t
matter if you get any paint on the walls when you paint your ceiling as it will be covered when you paint the walls.
-
Start painting
the ceiling using a roller and extension pole, start in 1 corner working from side to side and paint across the
width of the ceiling (this is so you don’t get long paint streaks )
-
Try and
paint away from where there is natural light coming in to the room, usually the window. Start by painting small areas, I normally
paint a squareish patch about 4ft by 4ft but you can do whatever you feel comfortable doing, you should be done in no time.
Painting
the Walls
-
As with
the ceiling, do all your cutting in first (ceiling line, corners and above the skirting). You can use masking tape on
top of the skirting (preventing getting any paint on it). Start painting in the corner of the room working your roller from
the middle to top to bottom working your way around the room.
